Works Under $500 at The Artist Project (part three)
The Artist Project 2012, Janice Colbert Booth 634. In addition to my usual work I have rounded out my range with a new format that I call ‘postcard size.’ The Baltic birch ‘postcard’ hard-edged paintings inspired by my trips to Provence, The Danube River in Budapest and Gaudi’s La Pedrera (Casa Milà) in Barcelona are floating in an 8 ply mat and glazed with 99% UV protected conservation clear glass. The environment friendly stained wood frames are in navy, aubergine, dark green or dark red. In honour of the Fifth Anniversary of TAP these works are part of Works Under $500 and will be hanging in my booth, priced at $450 each.

All Wrapped Up in a Cherry Frame
On Saturday morning I had the pleasure of hosting a studio visit when a client came by to pick up two paintings. She has followed my work for years and commissioned the work while visiting Up Art at the Gladstone Hotel in October 2011. The title for the pieces, in cherry floating frames is Luna Diptych.

LUNA DIPTYCH ACRYLIC ON BALTIC BIRCH, EACH PIECE 12" x 12"; IN CHERRY FRAME, 13.25" x 13.25" 2011
During the visit I discussed my new work that will be at The Artist Project 2012, Booth 634. I have worked in a new format that I call ‘postcard size.’ Inspired by my trips to Provence, the Danube River in Budapest and Gaudi's Casa Milà (La Pedrera) in Barcelona, the hard-edged paintings are on Baltic birch. The works are floating in an 8 ply mat and glazed with 99% UV protected conservation clear glass. The environment friendly stained wood frames will be in navy, purple and red. In honour of the Fifth Anniversary of TAP these works are part of Artworks $500.00 and Under and will be hanging in my booth with my usual work.

I also showed the piece I am entering in The Artist Project 2012/The Artist Competition. The theme this year is ENERGY! My entry is One Thousand Reds. The competition pieces are for sale and will be in a Feature Area of the show. A panel of jurors will award cash prizes to the winners.

As I was wrapping Luna Diptych for the trip home I learned that her husband didn't know about the commission. They were a surprise. <3
Later in the afternoon she sent me an e-mail:
“Just wanted to let you know your pieces were a huge hit! Everyone wanted to “own” them and hang them in their own rooms . . . ."
Other than briefly indicating the direction for her commission; she gave me carte blanche on how to go ahead. I had not done a commission before and was pleasantly surprised at how much fun it was to collaborate with this client. I look forward to doing more commissions in the future.
