SALES ARE UP, GALLERY AT THE PORCH DOOR

"July sales at the gallery are up and lots of new visitors too. Woohoo!

[We’re all wilting in Ontario but with those thick 1830’s limestone walls] the porch gallery is cool inside. Visitors often comment on that when they step inside. At the moment there are lots of locally inspired Kingston landscapes in the gallery to choose from. Or if that's not your thing, other small art pieces from a variety of fantastic artists make unique one of a kind gifts and personal treasures.  Summer is sizzling but you don’t have to at the Gallery at the Porch Door!"

Here are two of my works from my collection Framed Wood Postcards, that are now at the Gallery at the Porch Door. They are professionally framed with 8 ply mats, conservation glass and environment friendly wood frames.

La Pedrera, is the pin wheel quilt pattern. I sketched the pattern from a marquetry floor in Gaudi's apartment building La Pedrera, in Barcelona. I chose blue, blue and more blue for the water and sky of the Costa Brava. Do you see how the pattern spins, just like children's summer pin wheels?

French Windows III, blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red and yellow. There's no limit to the colours for the French window and door paint colours that I photographed while in Provence. Can  you find the French Navy jersey stripe or the French flag?

Striking Gold

On the weekend I went shopping for heritage wood ironing boards. It is a frustrating experience because I never know if I’m going to find anything ‘good.’ The boards are rough, stained, burned and a little cupped from their decades of exposure to steam. When I do come across an ironing board I face the double challenge of deciding whether it is good enough to work with for a painting support and yet I don’t pass on them hastily because I don’t know when I will find another one.

As my inventory grows I find that I relish taking on any that I find.

This time I struck gold. I found five ironing boards, two at a garage sale that are quite down on their luck, one in a barn and two others (one with a stripped bolt) at antique markets in the country side north of Toronto.

I take them to my 'outdoor studio' (the cottage) where they begin their new life as archival painting supports. The first step is to give them a good vacuüm with my shop vac and then a thorough wash with the garden hose and wood soap to remove all the grime that has accumulated. The last step is to sand them and then they are ready to move indoors to my studio.
